This large charcoal drawing from 1947 immediately asserts its presence through the tension between a dark ground and a lively linear script. The white and gray strokes, sometimes curved, sometimes angular, cross and overlap like fragments of a language in the process of being born…

Here Lanskoy has fully entered his abstract period: he does not seek to represent, but to make the very movement of thought felt.

Space is constructed by successive contrasts: deep shadowed zones that hold our gaze, and luminous lines that push the eye to travel, to rebound, to return.

And although one senses an economy of means in the charcoal, the eraser, and the pressure applied… the whole rigor of the composition is underpinned by the drawing.

On the chromatic level, black and white are not mere opposing values but compose a genuine dialogue: one anchors, the other elevates; one preserves the memory of the gesture, the other reveals its breath… Their exchange transforms the charcoal into an abstract, deeply sensitive poetry.

This Composition of 1947 marks the emergence of the constants that will define Lanskoy’s work: the written line as an expressive driving force, a chromatic economy founded on black and white, and the tension between geometric structure and gestural freedom.
