Albert MARQUET 1875-1947
With frame:
48 x 56 cm – 18.89 x 22.04 in.
After a three‑week stay in Amsterdam in February 1938, for an exhibition devoted to him in the Dutch capital, Marquet continued his journey to Sweden. He arrived in early March in Stockholm, where he would spend two months painting.
Marquet was delighted both by the warm welcome he received from the inhabitants and by the presence of water on all sides of the city. From his hotel, he painted this view of the quay, located upstream from the Djurgårdsborn bridge, which leads to the small island of the same name. A particular light sharply distinguishes the greenish tones of the canal water from the whitish and bluish hues of the sky.
