Léonard Tsuguharu FOUJITA 1886-1968
“Jeune femme aux chats” (Young Woman with Cats), painted in 1956, is a work characteristic of Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita’s highly personal style. A Japanese artist established in Paris, Foujita blends his Japanese artistic heritage with Western traditions in his painting.
The young woman occupies the center of the composition and looks directly at us. Her face, very pale, almost white, is rendered with great delicacy and minimal modeling. This whiteness, together with the fineness of the contours, is one of the major hallmarks of Foujita’s art.
The precise, elegant line recalls the tradition of Japanese drawing and ink. The colors, notably the reds and blues of the garments, remain light and contrast with the whiteness of the face and background. Foujita thus favors drawing and the delicacy of the surface over strong pictorial effects.
The cats also occupy an important place: they are depicted with great precision and seem almost like characters in their own right. Their gazes bring the scene to life and create a silent exchange with the viewer.
Despite its apparent simplicity, the composition emits a strange, gentle, almost dreamlike atmosphere. The young woman’s fixed stare and impassive face reinforce this impression of mystery. Foujita transforms an everyday scene into a timeless image, close to a dream or a fairy tale. This work perfectly illustrates the dialogue between East and West, without one dominating the other.
Yet within this simple, elegant scene, Foujita also manages to impart a silent, mysterious dimension.
One can read here a certain reference to sacred and religious art that interested Foujita in the 1950s, drawing inspiration from the Italian Primitives. With elements such as these green borders, Foujita may have sought an architectural structure to isolate the figure as the masters of the past did, thereby suggesting a timeless dimension—almost like a secular Madonna.
This border also reinforces the sense of framing and trompe‑l’œil, emphasized by the green tone contrasting with Foujita’s characteristic white background. Window or door, Foujita seems to place his model on the threshold of two worlds from which the young girl gazes at us.
