Typical of the artist’s 1920s work, this oil painting demonstrates his attention to color. It should be remembered that Louis Valtat is often described as a precursor to Fauvism: his early use of vivid colors and autonomous chromatic surfaces helped pave the way for the bold color experiments of the early 20th century.
Here, Plat de prunes transforms an ordinary motif into a pictorial object through color, the rhythm of brushstrokes, and a balanced composition. The warmth of the tones and the simplicity of the subject suggest a work oriented toward visual pleasure and the appreciation of everyday life, while also demonstrating Valtat’s chromatic freedom.
