In this luminous work, Albert Marquet returned to Algiers, one of his favored ports. The elevated vantage point is characteristic of his work and allows the viewer to appreciate the entire bay. The turquoise water seems to absorb the light only to release it again in supple reflections. Nothing is forced, nothing is demonstrative; “Marquet paints the way one observes,” with a calm, almost meditative attentiveness.

In the foreground, the palm tree draws the eye and appears to be the painting’s pivot. It introduces a gentle verticality that contrasts with the horizontal sweep of the port and its quays. It is not an exotic motif but a living element within a landscape dominated by water and port infrastructure.

The glowing red rooftops, the tiny silhouettes, the ochre façades form an everyday scene that might seem ordinary, yet here it is transformed by light. Marquet excelled in this ability to make the commonplace vibrate.
