Jean DUBUFFET 1901-1985
In “Paysage avec un personnage” (Landscape with a Figure), executed on 10 July 1980, Jean Dubuffet offers one of the most compelling expressions of his exploration of the inner landscape.
The work unfolds as a densely saturated visual field in which hatchings, arabesques, cellular motifs and geometric forms intertwine, creating a space devoid of horizon or vanishing point.
The significance of the work is further enhanced by its distinguished provenance, notably its inclusion in the collection of Armande Ponge. The daughter of the poet Francis Ponge, she became a close friend and longstanding collaborator of Jean Dubuffet and served as the first Director of the Fondation Dubuffet from 1975 to 1997.
The work's inclusion in the landmark exhibition Jean Dubuffet, les dernières années, held at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1991, further underscores its importance.
