Sonia DELAUNAY 1885-1979

81 x 61 cm – 31.88 x 24.01 in.
This is one of the preparatory gouaches for the Album Les Illuminations, containing 15 stencils, illustrating 9 poems by Arthur Rimbaud.
Modernity and movement are present in the work and at the heart of the plastic concerns that Delaunay explored throughout her life.
The colors chosen by the artist resonate with one another, alter each other and complement one another — blue, for example, comes to balance red. Chromatic forces are created, animate the forms, and produce a dynamic optical effect. Rhythm then arises from the repetition of shapes and hues. The frequent use of the title "Rythme Couleur" deserves to be highlighted: Sonia Delaunay takes it up as a leitmotif, a kind of mantra that expresses her renewed faith in the theory she long defended and consistently put into practice.
