Mash Evening 2026: “Jean Dubuffet, From Landscapes to Site": Evening event at the gallery

Nearly forty galleries are joining to celebrate an offer an exceptional cocktail party in the Matignon-Saint Honoré district, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.

This collection highlights a pivotal phase in Jean Dubuffet’s artistic exploration, in which the landscape motif transforms into a mental topography.

About the selection 

This concise and dense selection includes, in particular, five ink-and-collage works from 1980, as well as a painting (1981) that illustrates the transition from “Landscapes” to “Site.”

In the late 1970s and around the turn of 1980–1981, Dubuffet revitalized his visual vocabulary by emphasizing the primacy of the line and the materiality of collage.

Thus, within the confines of a single sheet and the simplicity of black, Dubuffet’s “Landscape” consists of swaths of hatching, cells, and scribbles, with the human figure serving as an anchor.

Then, in 1981, the “Site” expanded on this concept: the painted surface mounted on canvas established the background as an independent element through color and texture. The composition became a living environment and reflected the continuity of Dubuffet’s thinking on art brut and its spontaneous gesture.

These works embody the transformation Dubuffet underwent: the graphic mark ceases to illustrate a scene and becomes a mental geography, where lines, textures, and collages compose interior territories rather than exterior views.
