Odilon REDON 1840-1916
With frame:
74 x 65 cm – 29.13 x 25.59 in.
In the last decades of his career, Odilon Redon gradually moved away from the enigmatic visions and charcoal noirs that had first established his reputation, exploring instead a world in which color became an experience in its own right. From this point onward, floral bouquets assumed a central place in his work. Far from being mere decorative exercises, they became a field of experimentation through which visible nature was transformed into an inner vision.
In Rose, Peonies and Cornflowers in a Green Vase, Redon gathers a small selection of flowers rendered with remarkable economy of means. The bouquet appears to float within an indeterminate, almost immaterial space. No anecdotal detail anchors the scene in a specific setting; the ochre background functions as a vibrant surface that absorbs light and lends the composition a deeply contemplative atmosphere.
