Jean DUBUFFET 1901-1985
With frame:
33,5 x 42,5 cm – 12.99 x 16.53 in.
L’Arbre (The Tree) distills, in a small format, the energy and formal logic of the Hourloupe. The composition unfolds as a network of thick black contours that partition the surface into irregular cells. These cells, filled with red and blue color fields and hatching, create a jagged rhythm in which color functions like an internal pulse.
While the title guides the reading toward the vegetal, Dubuffet does not yield to figurative representation. And although a sense of arborization can be inferred from the fragmented structure and implicit verticality, it remains above all a graphic motif — a sign emerging from a “mental realm.”
