Paul SIGNAC 1863-1935
With frame:
53 x 69 cm – 20.86 x 27.16 in.
We approach Antibes along the fishermen’s quay and catch a glimpse of the Porte Marine, long the only gate opening the basin through the ramparts. To the right, one can make out the tower of the château, which today houses the museum celebrating Picasso, Staël, Léger, Hartung…
But it is 1931, and Signac, with his light watercolor, captures the water’s transparency and the clarity of the sky. The artist preserves his keen sense of color and rhythm: the sea sparkles while the boats seem to float in a symphony of pure, juxtaposed tones.
