Marcel GROMAIRE 1892-1971
With frame:
51,5 x 62,5 cm – 20.27 x 24.6 in.
The watercolor Le Cirque (1931) immediately captures the rhythmic force and density that characterize Marcel Gromaire’s work. On paper, the silhouettes unfold like sculpted masses: dancer and musicians are not so much described as constructed, their volumes defined by crisp, animated contours that recall the rigor of studio drawing.
The palette, dominated by deep blues, muted reds and softened greens, creates a vibrant contrast that amplifies the scene’s energy. The watercolor is treated with an almost painterly density: layered washes, controlled planes of color and clear reserves compose a fluid matter in which the transparency of the water serves the monumentality of the forms.
