Jean HÉLION 1904-1987
With frame :
73,5 x 57,5 cm – 28.9 x 22.6 in.
In 1946 Jean Hélion painted Couple au parapluie (Couple with an Umbrella), one of the emblematic works of his return to figurative art. The scene, simple in appearance, shows a couple walking under an umbrella, captured in a suspended moment where the everyday becomes a pictorial motif.
Here, Hélion combines the formal rigor inherited from his abstract work with a keen observation of modern life. The solidly constructed figures stand out in an atmosphere that one senses is urban, bathed in bright light. The work bears witness to this New York period, during which Hélion invented a poetic, vibrant, and profoundly human realism.
