Created in 1980, Landscape with a Figure (Paysage avec un personnage) belongs to the final phase of Jean Dubuffet’s career, when the artist continued his exploration of a world liberated from the conventions of representation.

In this sheet, a schematic figure appears in the foreground and at the very bottom of the composition, as though emerging from an unstable landscape composed of intertwined lines, nervous scribbles, and fragmented forms.

Dubuffet thus overturns the traditional hierarchy between figure and landscape: the human presence becomes only one element within a teeming universe that extends across the entire surface of the page.

The pictorial space seems to take shape spontaneously under the artist’s hand, without any distinction between figure and setting.

Yet the use of collage introduces the figure as an autonomous element, disrupting the reading of the image and heightening its enigmatic character.
