On February 1, 1981, he began the Psycho‑sites, a cycle that would end one year later. Dubuffet ventured into a new domain and began working in acrylic paint. Guided by the instinctive movement of his brush, he swept aside established order. He fractured the space of his painting, the “site”, into vague, imaginary places. Within these cavities appear archetypal figures, hastily drawn, who seem to be visiting this phantasmagorical landscape. These emblematic silhouettes give the surface scale and depth, transforming it into a genuine scene. The artist unleashes his creative freedom and infuses the painting with a powerful breath.

To the audacity of the line, he adds that of color. He gives it full prominence and delights in making it burst forth in vivid, intense, even violent tones: red, blue, yellow, and black. A perpetual iconoclast, Dubuffet, as if he had forgotten everything, lets his imagination roam freely, exploring and experimenting with a new path.
