The Plage de la Vignasse is a small sandy cove located in Bormes les Mimosas, in the south of France on the shores of the Mediterranean. It is a wild and quiet beach, with turquoise blue water and shade under the pine trees.

It is still be reached via the coastal path from the Estagnol beach. In 1891 it was the favorite place for the painter Henri-Edmond Cross, who produced several canvases in a pointillist style. It depicts the blue sea, golden sand, green pines and les Îles d’Or in the distance.

Our painting is the study and the first version of the Plage de la Vignasse exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1892. This oil - one of the rare, still privately owned compositions of the years 1891-1892, intermixed alongside the masterpieces of the same period which are preserved notably in France at the Musée d'Orsay and the Museum of Le Havre, as well as in the most prestigious American collections.
