Marie Laurencin established herself within the École de Paris through an immediately recognizable pictorial language.
The Joueuse de banjo, coiffed with pearls and wearing a discreet necklace, occupies a space where colour stands in for both decor and light.
The tones — powdered pinks, grey‑blues and sea‑greens — soften the scene and wrap the musician in a delicate veil, muting contrasts and giving her skin a diaphanous hue.
The oval face, elongated eyes and red mouth create a presence at once distant and intimate, an icon of a dreamed femininity. The instrument introduces a note of popular music that converses with the painting’s decorative grace.
Everything contributes to an atmosphere of musical reverie in which grace and melancholy answer one another. Here Laurencin suspends time to share her intimate and resolutely modern vision of the female figure.
