Drawn in marker in February 1967, Ciseaux belongs fully to the Hourloupe cycle, a period in which Jean Dubuffet developed a graphic language built on thick black lines, compartmentalized forms, and a palette limited to red, blue, and white.
The central shape, carved into irregular cells, oscillates between figure, object, and sign: Dubuffet is not seeking to represent, but to conjure a presence, as a mental silhouette, almost an abstract "character."
