Jean DUBUFFET 1901-1985
With frame:
62,5 x 52,5 cm – 24.6 x 20.7 in.
Created on 29 May 1980, Landscape with Three Figures belongs to the period when Jean Dubuffet pushed his graphic language of signs, fragments and interwoven linear networks to its furthest limits.
In this ink and collage composition, the three figures seem to emerge from a dense web of black lines that spreads across the entire surface. The landscape is no longer an identifiable setting but a mental, shifting and unstable space in which figures and environment merge into one another.
Reduced to a few elemental forms, the silhouettes evoke almost childlike presences or archaic masks. Their faces, constructed through a handful of expressive marks, become the principal points of visual focus amid this profusion of graphic activity.
The use of collage further introduces visual disruptions that enrich the composition and heighten its fragmentary character.
