The Catamurons are among the major series in Hantaï’s oeuvre. Created shortly after the Mariales series (1960–1962), here Hantaï folds the support densely at the center and paints only that area, leaving the surrounding surface intact and literally creating an empty frame around the central motif. The Catamurons thus appear square or rectangular, centered, with blue and black pigments contrasting with the surrounding surface.
